Ruching

  • Ruching is a french term that means to gather, ruffle or pleat.
  • It is a sewing technique. The material is evenly folded, stitched and gathered until the desired result is reached. More than double the material length required for the garment is needed in ruching.
  • Ruching adds visual detail to clothing. It has been used for many years to decorate clothing, accessories and quilts. It is used in the design of trousers, sleeves, tops and dresses.
  • It became popular in the 19th Century as a way to decorate women's clothing, hats and petticoats.
